Leading Industry Action on Climate Change

June 21, 2022

The world is transitioning to a zero-carbon economy and Icon is taking action.

Icon has decided to join a growing group of companies worldwide, and in doing so are one of the first Australian construction companies to work with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), demonstrating our commitment to lowering our emissions footprint in line with climate science.

We believe that mitigating our impact on the environment cannot be done by purchasing offsets alone, and that we need to change the nature of the way we do business to make sustainable change.

This is being done as part of the Race to Zero by 2050.

Why is Icon aiming for 1.5C and Net-Zero?

The IPCC’s Sixth Assessment report was ‘code red’ for humanity.

It showcased the need for urgent climate action to maintain a habitable planet for humankind.

To avoid the most significant effects of climate breakdown, we must halve greenhouse gas emissions before 2030, achieve net-zero emissions before 2050 and halt global temperature rise to 1.5°C

We as a business are not going to wait for a government mandate to take meaningful action. We have a responsibility to ourselves, our clients and community to take important steps towards 1.5C and Net-Zero.

This will be a gradual rather than sudden change to how we do business, and the broader Kajima network has made similar commitments to Science Based Targets.

Icon is dedicated to constructing cleaner and greener buildings, we adopt a focused approach to working with consultants to apply better Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles to buildings.

With the support of our parent company @Kajima Corporation, our commitment is boosted by Kajima’s investment in KaTRI (Kajima Technical Research Institute), which has an R&D focus on environmental, social and governance measures to promote sustainable societies, digital technology and open innovation.

We are proud to be leading the charge and encourage all other industry participants to join the Race to Zero.
