Joshua Woolnough

Why did you decide to join the construction industry?

Practicality. I was previously studying Finance and Real Estate Development which was all numbers and analysis. In construction you are provided the opportunity to apply the same skills but in the practical manor.

Why did you choose to join Icon?

Due to the reputation of the business in both Sydney and Melbourne. With Icon moving into QLD it provided a great opportunity to join this business from the beginning and assist in its growth and place in the QLD market.

What other Projects have you worked on?

  • Newstead Central Stage 1 (Aqua)
  • HMAS Moreton (Design Stage)
  • 64 Logan Road (Design Stage)

What things have you really enjoyed doing at work?

The level of opportunity for growth within Icon. As a Cadet I have been able to be involved in all facets of the project team which is something most business do not provide.

What are some of the challenges that you have faced on site?

Onsite you face new problems and challenges daily, which can include anything from fundamental design issues to serious weather events. Your ability to learn from managing these challenges and especially other team members with years of experience gives you the ability to plan and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. Some of these for myself include:  procurement of an international subcontractor, program constraints, design inconsistency and under-performing subcontractor management.

Can you describe some of the key things that you have learned since you joined the company?

Starting at Icon I had no clue about anything to do with construction. Icon has taught me everything from understanding buildable construction methodologies to time management and everything in-between.

How would you describe the team environment?

Always willing to help. This is especially important for a Cadet/Graduate. There is nobody in the Icon business I would not be comfortable going to for help as they understand that the more you learn the move valuable you will be to helping the Icon team.

What makes you proud to work at Icon?

The people you work with and projects we deliver.

What advice would you give to new Graduates or Cadets joining the team?

Attitude is everything. It doesn’t matter how much experience you have just come in with an open mind and a willingness to learn and you will thrive in this business.

What do you do in your spare time?

Socialising with friends and spending as much time as possible at the beach.
