Why did you decide to join the construction industry?

I have always worked in construction in some way, shape, or form so it was an easy decision to come back to it.

Why did you choose to join Icon?

I had a friend at Uni working there and he had nothing but good things to say, so it was an easy choice.

What other Projects have you worked on?

  • Carbon Revolution
  • Deakin Uni

What things have you really enjoyed doing at work?

Mostly I enjoy the day-to-day on-site problem solving. I have enjoyed the freedom to make decisions, and how well the project teams work together.

What are some of the challenges that you have faced on site?

The challenges so far are similar to that of what I have enjoyed most. Knowing what is the right or wrong call to make and then making that call. Additionally, as a new employee at Icon you are faced with a million and one things to remember and it can be daunting at times. However, as time goes past and you become efficient at handling your responsibilities and those daunting tasks become second nature.

Can you describe some of the key things that you have learned since you joined the company?

Coming from a construction background lots of the day-to-day site activities came naturally to me. However, sitting on the other side of the fence (management) is a lot different. The key item for me was learning how important time management is in this industry, without it an average day can become a lot more dysfunctional than it should be. Everyone has different strategies for managing their time. You may find you work better on certain tasks at certain times throughout the day and then allocate your time accordingly. Other key learning items are computer programmes (INX, CostCon, Aconex, Db Authorise etc).

How would you describe the team environment?

The teams I have worked with so far have been amazing. Everyone is willing to sacrifice some of their time to help you because they can all see the bigger picture, they realise the you getting better will in turn help them deliver a successful project.

What makes you proud to work at Icon?

I’m proud to work at Icon because of our reputation within the industry, not so much with other building companies but more so with contractors. We are not viewed as a “standover” type builder and contractors are generally more than happy to preform works for us because they know they will be looked after.

What advice would you give to new Graduates or Cadets joining the team?

Sponge up every bit of information that comes your way. Put yourself out there, get amongst it, and never be afraid to ask the question.

What do you do in your spare time?

Surf, Golf and getaways as often as possible.
