The Centre for Advanced Imaging is a highly advanced medical imaging facility and includes a cyclotron unit, used to generate radioactive isotopes for medical imaging equipment. The new structure was constructed at the Centre of the University of Queensland’s St Lucia Campus, and contains several magnetic resonance imaging units, a full floor of PC2 laboratories, associated teaching and academic spaces and related facilities. It is the only facility of its type in Australia, one of only a handful in the world and houses a powerful MRI system that is more than twice as strong as any other MRI system currently available in the Southern Hemisphere. The project included the extensive refurbishment of the adjoining Gehrmann Building and also the chillers on the nearby Ritchie Building. This highly advanced project required specialist construction skills, given the very high operational standards required for cyclotrons and MRI installations.
