Key Milestone Reached for RDX Lumina in Gold Coast Innovation Precinct
January 17, 2025
A significant milestone has been achieved in the development of the $154 million Innovation Centre of Excellence (RDX), with the completion of its structural framework celebrated at a topping-out ceremony. The project, delivered by Icon in partnership with Northwest Healthcare Properties through their NZX-listed Vital Healthcare Property Trust, represents a major advancement in establishing Lumina within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct (GCHKP) as a premier hub for health, innovation, and technology.
Once complete, this state-of-the-art facility will house world-leading deep tech, health science, innovation, and technology tenants. It will feature Australia’s first Image-Guided Therapy Surgical and Robotics Training Centre, designed to lead precision treatments for stroke, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and spinal injuries. Additionally, the RDX building will create an ecosystem that fosters collaboration among researchers, technologists, investors, and clinicians, driving sustainable advancements and addressing global challenges.
Located within Lumina, a 9.5-hectare precinct dedicated to life sciences, health, and technology-related businesses, the RDX building reinforces the Gold Coast’s position as a global innovation leader. Its proximity to Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University, and Gold Coast Private Hospital, with plans for a pedestrian bridge link, ensures accessibility and promotes collaboration across the precinct.
The facility will span 14,509sqm of gross floor area across eight levels, featuring high-quality end-of-trip facilities, rooftop terraces, and 182 car parking bays, including EV charging stations. The design prioritises sustainability, targeting 6-star Green Star certification with innovative features such as:
- A carbon-neutral, all-electric design powered by rooftop solar PV.
- Energy performance exceeding industry benchmarks by 25%.
- A 20% reduction in embodied carbon compared to standard buildings.
- Enhanced air quality with fresh air supplies 50% above code requirements.
The topping-out milestone reflects the collective efforts of the project team, including globally recognised designers, builders, and stakeholders. With construction advancing on schedule, the RDX building remains on track for mid-2025 completion. The facility is expected to attract world-class tenants, create jobs, and drive economic growth while enhancing Queensland’s healthcare and technology sectors.
As the RDX Lumina development moves closer to completion, it is poised to become a hub for breakthrough discoveries in deep tech, pioneering medical treatments, and sustainable innovation, benefitting the Gold Coast, Queensland and the broader national interest.
This achievement highlights the project’s commitment to excellence and innovation, setting a new benchmark for life sciences and commercialisation in Australia.
