A Landmark in Social Housing: Governor-General Inaugurates Project Independence Canberra

February 13, 2024

Last week marked a significant milestone for social housing in the ACT, as the Icon team proudly hosted the Office of the Governor-General for the official opening of Project Independence Canberra. This pioneering development is setting a new standard for home ownership, offering individuals with intellectual disabilities a unique opportunity to gain equity in a property while living as independently as possible.

Project Independence is more than just housing; it’s a community. The development features three standalone houses, each containing 10 self-contained units, along with shared kitchens and laundries. It also includes accommodation for a live-in Resident Coordinator, ensuring round-the-clock support for residents. This innovative model of social housing is designed to foster independence, community, and security for its occupants.

Project Manager Lachlan Dunne shared his thoughts on the project, highlighting the immense satisfaction the Icon team felt in contributing to such a meaningful initiative. “Facilitating the construction program pro-bono was not just a project for us; it was a mission to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Seeing the joy and independence it brings to the residents is truly rewarding,” Dunne said.

The success of Project Independence Canberra is a testament to the power of collaboration. Icon’s partnership with project supporters went beyond conventional boundaries, with companies providing in-kind support that was instrumental in bringing this vision to life. Special thanks go to Amber Group Australia, Dulux, BlueScope, Landform, Heyday Group, O’Neill & Brown Group, Sentinel Security & Technology Group, Crimsafe Security Systems, East Painting, CBS Certifiers, INDESCO, Vital, Watson Blinds & Awnings, Caroma Industries, Harvey Norman Commercial Division, Morgans Group, and D Group Australia for their generous contributions.

This project exemplifies how collaborative efforts can create innovative solutions to pressing social issues.

As Icon continues to lead in construction and development, Project Independence Canberra stands as a shining example of our commitment to building not just homes, but futures. We’re inspired by the difference we’ve made together and look forward to future projects that challenge us to think differently about how we live and support each other in our communities.
