Project: Vanuatu Cook and Tiroas Barracks Redevelopment
Completion Date: February 2024
Value: $84 million
The Department of Defence Australia and the Republic of Vanuatu worked together to deliver a large infrastructure project handed over to the Vanuatu Police Force in Port Vila and Luganville. Works included: > Cook Barracks in Port Vila: New engineer and vehicle workshops, accommodation and training facilities, a fire station, chapel and a medical centre. Roads and essential services were upgraded to support the new facilities. > Tiroas Barracks in Luganville: New armoury and medical facilities, as well as critical a joint Vanuatu-Australia initiative to upgrade Vanuatu’s inter-island National Emergency Radio Network. Essential services were upgraded to support the new facilities. A central focus of the redevelopment was maximising local industry and commercial involvement, emphasising the use of local materials, suppliers, and service providers. The project delivered local skills development in safety and trade works, while prioritizing worker well-being and project success. Community consultation and risk mitigation strategies were implemented to address the effects associated with large-scale construction on this small island. Environmental impacts were continually monitored throughout the project duration to ensure the minimisation of risks to the environment.
